When it comes to chocolate cake, we don't mess around. A chocolate cake should be rich, dense, and—above all else—chocolatey. We aren't looking for an overly complicated recipe, we just want a really good chocolate cake. Of course, we all know Martha reigns as the queen in the kitchen, but Snoop has been her sidekick for sometime now. He's surely picked up a lot of knowledge along the way. So let's see whose cake is truly the best.
SNOOP'S RECIPE
Officially called, "Go Shorty, It's Your Birthday", it's exactly what you would expect Snoop's cake to be: straightforward, no fuss, and super easy to follow. He opted for vegetable oil over butter, and added buttermilk for extra tang instead of regular milk. It's a great back pocket chocolate cake recipe that whips up surprisingly fast. Our taste testers seemed to really like it, but how does it compare to Martha's?
MARTHA'S RECIPE
At first glance Martha's cake looks fancy. She calls for a specific (and not cheap) type of cocoa powder and uses cake flour instead of regular all-purpose. She also adds coffee to her cake recipe, which we are all for. Coffee makes the chocolate flavor more intense and that's what we are looking for, after all, in a chocolate cake. Some of our taste testers didn't think that the final cake was quite as special as her ingredients would lead you to believe, however. Her chocolate frosting recipe was exceptionally easy to make, which also gave her some bonus points in our book.
THE VERDICT
Snoop takes the gold! We couldn't believe that the student finally became the master, but it looks like Martha has been teaching Snoop well. His cake had all the classic flavors—the kind our tasters remember eating at birthday parties growing up. Overall his cake had a better chocolate flavor and was more moist than Martha's. Plus, who doesn't love a shower of sprinkles on top?
