Sorry, 'Cake Boss' fans. Carlo's Bake Shop closes 2 N.J. locations, because that's the way the cookie crumbles - NJ.com

Buddy Valastro’s empire of cake and pastry just got a little smaller, at least in New Jersey.

When it comes to Bergen and Morris counties, the “Cake Boss” will not be in, not any more.

The Ridgewood and Morristown locations of Carlo’s Bake Shop have closed, confirms Carlo’s spokeswoman Nicole Valdes.

“The leases at the two locations ended and the company chose not to renew,” she tells NJ Advance Media.

Valastro’s fleet of “Cake Boss” bakeries has shrunk by more than just a few crumbs. In August, the bakery chain shuttered another location in Red Bank. That closure followed another in Westfield that April. There are now three Carlo’s Bake Shops in the state.

The Ridgewood location of Carlo’s Bake Shop, which opened in 2013 in Wilsey Square, was Valastro’s first foray in New Jersey outside of Hoboken, where the bakery has been in operation since 1910, before Valastro’s family took over. The expansion followed Valastro’s rise to fame on the TLC reality series “Cake Boss," which premiered in 2009 and went on to run for 10 seasons. The show, which has filmed at both the original Hoboken bakery and the company’s factory at the Lackawanna Center in Jersey City, did not air in 2018. (Valdes says an 11th season is likely slated for this fall).

Carlo’s Bake Shop quickly expanded to other states — New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Texas, Florida, Nevada, Minnesota, George, California — as well as Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Morristown location was located on Market Street. A Cake Boss Cafe, which opened in 2011 at the Discovery Times Square Exposition on 44th Street, was the first New York City location. There’s currently a permanent Midtown location at Eighth Avenue and 42nd Street (at the Port Authority Bus Terminal).

“As the brand continues to grow with locations sprinkled all over the country and with an exceptionally robust online bakery making doorstep delivery throughout the continental United States possible, Carlo’s Bakery is shifting (its) focus in 2019 toward introducing new culinary concepts and a strong e-commerce rollout,” Valdes said in a statement. “We’re truly going to miss the Ridgewood and Morristown communities but hope to see our loyal Carlo’s Bakery lovers at our Hoboken and Wayne locations!”

The company ships confections including rainbow cookies, red velvet cake and cannoli nationwide and sells bakeware on its website.

Carlo’s Bake Shops remain open in Hoboken, Wayne and Marlton. The Wayne bakery is located within the Willowbrook Mall.

Valastro, 41, who grew up in Little Ferry, was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2018. “Cake Boss” follows Valastro as he works with fondant, sheet cake and Rice Krispie treats to design and build custom themed cakes with his bakery staff, which includes various members of his family. He’s been involved with two “Cake Boss” spinoff series, the reality competition series “Next Great Baker," which ran for four seasons, and “Kitchen Boss," which ran for two.

Even though he’s closed several bakeries in New Jersey, Valastro won’t be disappearing from TV anytime soon. He can also be seen on “Bake it Like Buddy,” his reality competition series on Discovery Family, which just wrapped its first season, and he has two new shows premiering in March on the Food Network.
