LAFAYETTE, Ind.— Local bakery owner and artist Makenzie Kus will be featured in an episode of the Food Network's newest culinary competition show "Winner Cake All" on Jan. 21.
Kus, owner of Something Blue Bakery located at 918 Main Street, said over the summer a Food Network representative reached out to her after seeing her artfully skilled cake sculptures on Instagram. Kus said they asked if she would be interested in interviewing for a spot on a competitive TV show.
"I needed a partner to go on the show, and my employees have kind of crazy schedules, so I asked my sister," she said. "She was pretty excited, and she learned a bunch before we went on the show and then we were off."
The new show, which premiered its first episode on Jan. 7, brings together four top-notch bakers each week in a series of out-of-this-world challenges, according to the Food Network's online show description, hosted by Giada De Laurentiis.
Kus said the interview process was very lengthy, but being on the show was everything a viewer would expect out of a reality show competition.
"We didn't let the nerves get to us," Kus said. "We enjoyed it for the experience that it was. It was wild. Of course a little stressful, but it was a very unique experience that not a lot of people get to do."
Lindsay Doty, Kus's sister who helped on the show, said she jumped at the opportunity to help her sister.
"I always knew in the back of my mind that an opportunity like this would come to Makenzie," Doty said. "There are only so many people who can sculpt at the level she does in the country."
Kus said she and her fellow contestants have remained in touch after competing on the show, something she feels is one of the biggest takeaways, but the support she had from her family through help with babysitting Doty's children and getting them to and from the airport left her feeling eternally grateful.
"Looking over to see what she was doing while we were competing, and then looking back to when we were kids at her creativity then is just incredible," Doty said. "She deserves every bit of this."
You can watch Kus and Doty compete on Winner Cake All in the episode "It's a Broadway Princess Party," airing Jan. 21 at 10 p.m. on the Food Network.
