Westfield celebrates 350th birthday with cake lighting event - WWLP.com

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The city of Westfield celebrated it's 350th birthday with cake Tuesday.

City officials hosted a cake lighting in the center of Westfield, because it's not a proper birthday celebration without a cake!

"This is day one of a whole year of celebrating our 350th birthday here in Westfield," said Westfield Mayor's Brian Sullivan.

Westfield's Mayor and city resident gathered in park square to kick off an extended birthday celebration on New Years Day with the lighting of a 15-foot, 2,000-pound wooden cake.

This is the second time Westfield celebrated a major milestone. In 1969, they kicked off their birthday celebrations with a cake lighting, and this year they carried on that tradition.

Residents attended Tuesday's cake lighting with their children who will remember this moment on the city's 400th birthday in 2069.

The birthday celebrations give families an opportunity to learn about the city's history while spending time together.

Kathy Knapik of Westfield told 22News, "It's been a great effort by the community and local businesses to come forward and put together a wonderful year long series of events and it's exciting to be here and be a part of that."

Young children joined city officials in flipping the switch to light the 350 candles that surround the enormous cake.

The candles will be lit every night at dusk, and will remain lit until the city's official birthday celebrations in May.

Westfield's officials birthday will be celebrated on May 17th, 18th, and 19th. The city will host a parade, light off fireworks, and join together for a pancake breakfast.
